You will need the following tools: Torx driver with T and T bits, non marring pry bars and possibly a set of vice grips. Useful Tools, non marring pry bars and a Torx set only need T and T27 bits. BMW door actuators are available from several on-line retailers.
Just be sure to get the correct one since the front doors use a different connector that has 6 pins whereas the rear actuators have only 3 pins. Original left and replacement right door lock actuators. The door panels on the E36 are not hard to remove, you just need to pop off two screw covers behind the inside handle, and remove the screws they covered with T20 torx driver. The longer screw goes in the hole toward the front of the handle.
These covers expose two screws you must remove. Then you have to remove the dish behind the door pull and this is where I ran into trouble. Evidently, a lot of people break this part, assuming that it comes straight out.
The advice is to push it forward. First pry up the front, and THEN push forward. Push forward, but only after prying up the front part. See how latches need to be pushed forward to release. The next step is to pry off the door panel using a non-marring pry tool and gently pop out all of the plastic fasteners as you work your way around the door. Be careful around the black adhesive, since it will get over all over you if you touch it. Peel back foam insulation about half way and hold in place with duct tape.
Next you need to loosen 3 screws that hold in the door lock mechanism with a T27 torx driver. However, these screws have thread locking compound on them and I soon realized that I was either going to destroy the Torx recess or break the driver bit unless I loosened them with vice grips first. Fortunately this is easy to do. Use adhesive tape over the adjacent paint around the screw heads if you want to avoid scratching it with the vice grips. We will refurbish and return them within 1 working day for the uk and days Worldwide.

This can include DSC, and start assistant failure. This is a common problem on BMW cars. If you read the cars fault code and see 2B15 or 2B16 it is most likely a faulty circuit board in the actuators. Sadly many people around the world have been mislead by the internet, actuator failure is mainly due to electronic failures and not really much to do with the gears. Generally electronics inside Throttle Actuators fail around 55k miles, the gear wear inside this unit at that mileage would be present on just 3 teeth and you will see some fine dust inside.
This is normal, sadly people believe this tiny wear cause intermittent failures. So yes we replacement gears, we use only the best and have a lifetime warranty and they are self lubricating and designed to out live the car.

With a little help from our team of ASE certified mechanics and about a half hour of your time you can replace this part to get your climate control back working again.
Or you can see what you are paying for when taking your car in for repairs. A blend door actuator is made up of an electric motor that turns a plastic gear set in one direction or another which is connected to an air control door pivot at the final drive of the unit. An actuator can go bad in of two ways; first the electric motor can burn out rendering the unit non-responsive so nothing changes when the temperature or vent mode controls are moved.
Next, the plastic gear set will become brittle and break which will sometimes allow the unit to work while making a ticking or clicking noise and then stop. This is a common problem in most car's heater and air conditioner systems. An air blend door actuator is constructed from a plastic housing, a small electric motor and a plastic gear set.
A door position sensor is also incorporate into the unit to send feed back information to the climate control computer. This actuator then moves temperature and air direction doors inside the heater plenum box which are designed to control mode settings such as temperature, floor, mid vent, defrost and fresh air or re-circulation modes. They also control hot and cold settings for right and left passenger compartments.
Your car's climate control computer gives an electrical command to the actuator to start moving the actuator motor to change air direction modes. This direction is according to the temperature chosen by the driver or passenger on dual climate control systems. Most systems have three to four of these units placed in various areas around the HVAC plenum that control mode operation and will vary by the car make and model.
You can get an OEM replacement actuator from Amazon for what the garages pay for them in most cases. You will need a tool set including an 5. Using a small socket and ratchet remove the mounting bolts that hold the under dash plastic cover on the passenger side.
These screws can be in obscure places so look around for them.Seroconversion after 8 weeks
Once you have located and removed all of the mounting screws grasp the cover and gently pull it from the underside of the dash. This will expose the heater box with various controls including any wiring. Here is what it looks like when the glove box is removed exposing the blend door actuator for replacement. Here is a typical right side temperature actuator used for dual climate controls also temperature for signal mode units. This actuator hangs below the box which is one of the easier units to replace.
Begin by using a small screwdriver to release the wiring safety clip on the harness for the actuator. These clips can be brittle and break so be gentle. Once released gently pull down on the wiring connector and remove it from the blend door actuator.
Inspect the connector for rust or corrosion and clean as needed. Locate and remove the actuator mounting screws. There should be two or three screws holding it in place. A small universal might be needed to help remove the screws in awkward places. Once removed place the screws into a small container so they don't get lost.
How to Replace a Blend Door Actuator
Once all of the mounting screws have been removed the actuator should become loose.Johnny is a longtime online writer and car enthusiast. As a BMW owner, he has years of experience fixing problems with their engines. This article is an attempt to aggregate information in a single place regarding a defect in the X drive systems of BMWs that will typically affect ALL of the following models of BMWs at one point or another, typically around 80kk miles:. Make sure to check your model to ensure it has the same actuator motor and gear as described here and in the videos below.
I include here a description of the problem, links to outside information and some information on my own experience fixing this issue on a X3 E83 model. This article is for informational purposes only and the reader assumes all responsibility for attempting to fix without professional assistance. If you have both of these symptoms then the culprit is very likely to be a stripped gear inside the transfer case motor. The transfer case actuator motor is a small motor that is bolted on to the transfer case and can be removed and replaced or repaired with a new internal gear.
If you DO NOT hear the clicking described the cause could be something else not covered in this article. Watch this video for an excellent description of the problem and removal and replacement of the transfer case actuator motor:. So what's going on inside the transfer case actuator motor? In short, there is a nylon ie: plasticky gear inside the motor that is turned by a metal worm gear a screw. Over time the nylon part gets worn down and stripped and does not turn any more.
See the photos. There is a lot of discussion in various forums about how this gear does not ever seem to turn all the way around and you can fix it by simply rotating the gear to the unused portion a potential free fix. I cannot speak to whether that is a reliable long term fix since I did not try that. You can see from my photos however, that it indeed does not look like one side of the gear that still has the light green lubricant on it was ever touched or used by the worm gear,so take that for whatever it's worth.
My experience and decision was that if I was going to spend an afternoon underneath the car removing the actuator motor and taking it apart I did not want to risk the free fix failing at some point and having to do it all over again. You can order a new gear easily on Amazon with the provided link.
The hardest part was really just accessing the motor and torx bolts to get them off.Journeys 3rd grade vocabulary list

For all the posts below that have the yellow 4x4 and brake light please simply check your fluids prior to taking it to a shop. If the power steering fluid is even the tiniest bit low it will trigger the 4x4 light. Most of the time this will kill both lights but make sure to check your brake and all other fluids.
